Bachelor of Science in Textile Engineering
The Department of Textile Engineering offers a 4-year B.Sc. in Textile Engineering. DIU has responded to the continued trend in the Textile and Clothing (T&C) Sector of Bangladesh through offering comprehensive studies in Textile Engineering. In addition to obtaining detailed knowledge in the arena of Textile Engineering, students gain insights into current issues related to textiles, namely: environmental aspects in T&C fields and Quality Control Management. The Textile Industry has advanced rapidly in terms of the technology involved, materials produced and applications. Therefore, the syllabus for the program has incorporated courses relevant to the contemporary Textile Industry. Graduates with the B.Sc. degree will be able to implement different processes of Clothing Manufacturing (Lean Production) and Textile Manufacturing (Fiber Manufacturing, Spinning, Fabric Manufacturing & Wet Processing), and Production Planning & Control. Knowledge of T&C Management will help graduates perform better than Textile graduates of other universities.
Career opportunities exist not only within the T&C industry and sector, but also within related arenas, like sales and marketing of T&C machinery, marketing of dyes and chemicals, and clothing accessories. Local and foreign buying houses are absorbing comparatively higher numbers of Textile Engineering graduates as well.
Eligibility for Admission:
Applicants with a minimum second division or 2.5 GPA in both SSC and HSC from the Science group with Mathematics & Physics/Chemistry/Computer Studies or Diploma in Engineering (Textile/Chemical/Electrical /Mechanical/Power/Computer) or the equivalent may apply for admission in Textile Engineering.
Students with an English medium background are encouraged to apply for admission. For them 5 subjects in ‘O’ level and 2 subjects in ‘A’ level with a minimum GPA of 2.5 at each level or the equivalent is required.
Academic Session:
The academic session for all undergraduate programs extends over a period of 4 (four) academic years. One academic year is divided into two semesters beginning from January. Each semester is of 15 weeks duration with 13 weeks for class teaching, a 1 week break for examination preparatory leave, and 1 week for conducting examinations.
Qualifying Requirements:
In order to get a degree, a student must gain a minimum overall CGPA of 2.50 on the scale of 4.00. A maximum of two C grades may be omitted for calculation of the GPA. Students may improve their grade points by repeating two courses. A student obtaining an F grade in a course will be allowed to repeat the course. But a student will not be allowed to do so, if he/she obtains a total of three or more F grades in one or more than one course(s) taken together, during the period of his/her studies. If at the end of the second or any subsequent semester, the cumulative GPA falls below 2.50, he/she will not be allowed to continue in the program. A student must complete all the requirements for the degree within six consecutive semesters from the date of first admission.
The duration of each program is three semesters and the fees are to be paid in nine installments i.e. at the time of admission and at the beginning of each semester, before the midterm (i.e. in middle) and before the final exam (i.e. at the end of each semester). Due to changes of course offers, the payment of each semester may vary slightly but the total payment will remain the same.
Total credit requirement and duration of the program
To obtain a B.Sc. in Textile Engineering (TE), students will have to complete 154 credit hours. If any student fails in any course, s/he will get the opportunity to improve the grade by retaking the same in the subsequent semester. The B.Sc. in Textile Engineering program is of 4 (four) years duration of 08 semesters as shown below:
